Taste can’t be copied

By ShaKayla Eaddy

Taste isn’t something that can be bought or copied from other people, taste is something you refine over time, it’s something you learn from first hand experience, it’s something that is learned through trial and error, it’s learned through truly knowing who you are. You must know what you like and what you dislike to decide what’s your personal taste and what things align with good taste. When you have good taste you can see the vision in anything whether it’s art, interior design, fashion, food, wine, travel, music, literature etc. Having good taste translates through all industries and ways of life, it’s not something you have to prove, it’s not something that you have to even convince other people that you know. When you have good taste you flow to the beat of your own drum, you’re in tune with other people that understand the rhythm. It’s almost an unspoken language and only those in tune understand.

Those that don’t take the time to curate their style or taste can only move as far as the trends do because that’s what they’re following, when you don’t know what piques your own interest you can’t be your own blueprint.

That’s why I always say that it’s important to get out into the world, it’s important to explore, it’s important to see new things, it’s important to meet new people and see different places. So often people trap themselves in a box because of the environment they grew up in, but we’re constantly exposed to how much this world has to offer, that it’s a disservice to limit yourself.

It’s okay to be different or be considered an outsider, how far has people acting the same as everyone else really gotten them? Who are you trying to prove something to by trying to be just like everyone else? It all boils down to asking yourself do you want to blend in or stand out and does it actually benefit you?

Having good taste is exposing yourself to different worlds, being curious, reading, wanting to learn and moving with intention when it comes to your life. When you have good taste it reflects in every part of your life from how you dress (even on a casual day), how your home is decorated, the glassware you use, how you travel, the art you indulge in, how you carry yourself in your personal and work life, even down to how you communicate. The fact that having good taste is reflected in every part of your life is why it can’t be copied, a person with good taste doesn’t look to others for what to do, but they do allow others with good taste to introduce them to things and they’re open to learning more about it, not copying exactly what they’re doing. Having taste is adding a sense of sophistication, polish and elegance to every aspect of your life and once you refine it it’s like second nature.

It’s not about having more, it’s about choosing better. Good taste is CURATING a life you love from top to bottom. Taste evolves with you as you get older and live more life, and sometimes your taste even changes completely, but that’s apart of the game of life, the point is that you’re not waiting on the trends to make your next move and you’re not doing something just because, everything is curated and done with intention. When you have good taste you don’t even buy things that you don’t love.

This is your sign to start curating your taste, especially if you’re like me in your twenties, it’s the perfect time to do it. Why copy when you can be original?
